Key takeaways

  • Agent orders come in as ordinary online card payments, so a WooCommerce or Magento store can get one without a Stripe account.
  • The Link card only covers the amount the owner approved. If shipping or tax pushes the total higher at the last step, expect the order to decline.
  • When an agent picks the wrong item, refund as soon as the customer contacts you. Once a chargeback is filed, a refund won't undo it, and your own records have to carry the case.

Claude Stripe Link checkout lets a business owner using Anthropic's new Claude Duet app ask the agent to buy something online, approve the spend, and have Claude pay with a one-time card that works only for that merchant and that amount. For the store on the other end, the order arrives through your normal card checkout. You don't need a Stripe account to receive one. You do need a checkout that can finish a sale for software working under a fixed spending cap.

Duet is a limited U.S. preview as of late October 2026. The settings that decide whether these orders go through are ones you already control: how early you show the full total, how your fraud rules treat automated traffic, and whether you ever charge a card a second time.

What Anthropic and Stripe Launched on Oct. 21

Stripe announced on Oct. 21, 2026 that Anthropic had built two Stripe products into Claude Duet, a research-preview app that helps small business owners and professionals keep track of what needs their attention and carry out work they delegate. TokenPost reported that the U.S. preview is open to select Claude Pro and Max subscribers through a waitlist. Anthropic's help article on Link in Claude Duet adds that users need a U.S. payment method and that Link isn't available in Claude, Cowork or Claude Code for now.

Link's wallet for agents does the buying. Stripe's examples read like an office manager's week: digital ads, business cards, lunch for the team and more whiteboard markers, bought "anywhere on the internet." Stripe MCP works on the selling side, letting a Duet user send invoices and payment links, manage products and prices, analyze revenue and issue refunds from their own Stripe account.

Duet can also check out with Shopify's Shop Pay, according to Anthropic's announcement as reported by FourWeekMBA. The first agent buyers, then, are business owners restocking their own businesses. Stores selling office supplies, printing, promotional products or catering are selling exactly what Stripe's announcement names.

Anthropic's help article lays out the flow. The owner asks for something, such as "Reorder ink for the office printer." Duet finds the item and asks for approval. The owner then approves a Spend Request in the Link app or at app.link.com, which sets a maximum amount, and Link may place a temporary authorization on the owner's saved payment method. Duet pays with a one-time card "scoped to the merchant and amount," and the final charge completes only if the merchant completes the purchase.

Claude never receives the owner's full card or bank account number. It sees details such as the card type and last four digits, plus saved shipping addresses.

Stripe merchants can also receive agent payments as Shared Payment Tokens (SPTs). Stripe's agentic commerce documentation describes these as scoped payment credentials for agent-initiated purchases.

A common misreading: "This only matters if I'm on Stripe." Stripe says Duet can buy anywhere on the internet with a virtual card. To your store, that is an ordinary online card payment running through whatever gateway you use. A WooCommerce store on Authorize.net can receive one. Stripe and Shopify merchants simply have extra routes in.

The Approved Amount Is a Ceiling, so Show the Full Total Early

A human shopper who sees a higher shipping charge at the last step grumbles and pays. A one-time card limited to an approved amount can't.

Illustrative example (all numbers assumed). An office supply store sells a case of copy paper for $42.50. Its product page shows a flat shipping estimate of $9.95, and it adds sales tax only on the final checkout step. An owner asks Duet for two cases, sees $85.00 in merchandise plus $9.95 shipping, and approves a $95.00 maximum.

At checkout, the carrier rate for two cases comes back at $14.95, and 8% sales tax on the $85.00 of merchandise adds $6.80 (assume this state doesn't tax shipping). The real total is $106.75, or $11.75 above the card's limit. Expect the authorization to fail, and the store loses a sale it had already won.

The fix helps every shopper: show shipping and tax on the product page or in the cart, before payment.

The single-purchase limit also affects anything you charge later. Split shipments captured separately, upsells added after checkout and preorder balances all assume you can charge that card again, so plan to collect everything in one charge. If you sell items before they're in stock, read how to take preorders without triggering processor holds and ask your processor how partial captures behave on these cards.

Fraud Rules Built to Stop Bots Will Catch Good Agent Orders

Agent checkout is automated traffic with a real, accountable customer behind it, and most store defenses exist to stop automated traffic. Four kinds of rules deserve a look:

  • First-time card rules. Every agent order uses a brand-new card number, so a rule that distrusts unfamiliar cards distrusts every agent order.
  • Card-number velocity. A loyal customer reordering monthly looks like a stranger each time. Email and shipping address become the better repeat-customer signals.
  • Session behavior. An agent can go straight from product page to payment without browsing. Rules that penalize short sessions reject it.
  • Bot walls and challenges. CAPTCHAs that stop card-testing scripts also stop agents. Check how your 3-D Secure authentication settings handle a challenge when software is at the keyboard.

Stripe's agentic commerce page says Radar is built to tell legitimate agent-initiated transactions from fraud, with risk signals such as card-testing or stolen-card likelihood shared through SPTs. If you use another processor or a separate fraud tool, ask the vendor directly how it separates an agent from a card-testing bot.

The card networks run their own agent programs, Visa Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard Agent Pay. Stripe added support for their agentic network tokens, which pass issuers extra context in the authorization message. Neither Anthropic's nor Stripe's public Duet material says whether a Duet one-time card carries those signals, so don't assume your issuer or fraud tool sees anything special.

Don't whitelist automated traffic wholesale, because card testing hasn't gone anywhere. Loosen one rule at a time, review results weekly, and track false declines that turn away good customers.

When the Agent Picks the Wrong Item, Your Records Are Your Evidence

Anthropic's help pages split support three ways. Customers contact the store for order status, delivery, cancellations, returns, damaged or incorrect products and product refunds. Link Support handles Link account, approval and payment-method problems. Anthropic's getting-started page for Claude Duet sends a third case to Anthropic itself: when Duet "chose a different product, store, or option than you intended."

So an agent's wrong pick is Anthropic's support issue, not a defect in your product. That doesn't stop the cardholder from disputing the charge with their bank, though, and the Spend Request approval sits inside Link, where you can't see it. Your evidence has to come from your own records.

Illustrative example. A store lists "Dry-erase markers, box of 12," priced per box. The owner wanted 12 markers, Duet ordered 12 boxes, and the owner approved the spend without noticing.

The cheapest time to fix this is the owner's first email. If they contact the store about the wrong quantity, a quick return and refund usually costs less than a fight, and it can stop a dispute before it turns into a chargeback that counts toward your chargeback ratio. Before you refund, ask whether they've already contacted their bank. A refund on top of a chargeback can mean you pay twice.

If the owner goes straight to the bank instead, the timing works against you. Once a chargeback is filed, refunding the customer doesn't undo it. Respond through your processor's dispute process rather than sending a separate refund. Against a "not as described" claim, the store's case rests on four records: the confirmation email showing quantity and pack size, a saved copy of the product page with the unit of measure in text, delivery confirmation and the return policy shown at checkout. The issuer still makes the final call, but without these records you have little to submit.

"My assistant bought the wrong thing" is a new version of an old claim, and the playbook for spotting friendly fraud without losing customers applies. Make your billing descriptor match your storefront name so the charge is easy to recognize. If your platform lets you tag agent orders, do it, so you can compare their dispute rate with your other orders.

Which Stores Should Change Settings Now

If You Sell ThroughAgent Orders Reach You AsChange First
Stripe with Link enabledLink payments or Shared Payment TokensRadar rules; product data in Stripe
ShopifyShop Pay checkout or a regular card paymentVariant names, shipping shown in cart
WooCommerce, Magento or another card checkoutA one-time card through your gatewayBot blocking, first-time card rules
Digital products or servicesInstant delivery to an email or accountDelivery logs, plain-text descriptions

On any platform, an agent buys correctly only what it can read correctly. Put size, color, pack count and unit of measure in product titles as plain text, and keep inventory accurate so the agent never buys something you'll have to backorder. Stripe's documentation lists a catalog feed for structured product and inventory data, which is the Stripe-side version of the same discipline. Required account creation stops agents just as it stops people, so weigh guest checkout vs. forced accounts. On Shopify or WooCommerce, check your wallet settings and how your payment gateway screens card-not-present traffic.

Connecting Duet to Your Own Stripe Account Is a Separate Decision

Anthropic says the Stripe connector is separate from Link, and you can use either without the other. The connector gives an agent you authorize real powers over your account, including changing prices and issuing refunds. Before connecting it, decide who in the business may approve those actions, and review your Stripe activity log on a schedule.

Questions for Your Processor Before Agent Volume Grows

Get these answered in writing:

  1. Can I identify agent-initiated transactions in my reports?
  2. Which of my fraud rules or bot tools would block a legitimate agent checkout, and what should I adjust?
  3. How do single-use virtual cards behave with delayed capture, partial captures and split shipments?
  4. What happens when a 3-D Secure challenge fires during an agent checkout?
  5. What evidence do you recommend for "not authorized" or "not as described" disputes on agent orders?

If your current provider can't answer them, MannyPay supports online payment processing through gateways including Authorize.net and NMI, with 3-D Secure available. Request a free quote and a MannyPay specialist will reply within one business day.
