The payment processing news from October 29, 2026 is about where the big networks and processors plan to earn their next dollar, and for merchants that usually means new fees and new bundles. Mastercard's third-quarter results showed its paid services growing almost twice as fast as its core card network. Visa and Tencent agreed to explore linking Weixin Pay with Visa for travelers to and from China. A day earlier, Adyen accepted lower margins so it can sell loyalty and billing software alongside payments.
None of the three changes your rates this week. Each one is a reason to check something before the holiday rush.
Mastercard Q3 2026 Earnings: Services Grew Faster Than the Network
Mastercard reported third-quarter results on October 29 in its earnings release filed with the SEC. Net revenue was $9.8 billion, up 14% both as reported and on a currency-neutral basis. Net income was $4.6 billion, or $5.28 per diluted share. Gross dollar volume rose 7% in local currency to about $3.0 trillion, cross-border volume rose 11%, and switched transactions rose 9%.
The split in Mastercard's quarterly 10-Q is the part worth a merchant's attention. Payment network revenue grew 11% to $5.75 billion. Value-added services and solutions, the bucket that holds security, authentication, digital and engagement products, grew 19% to $4.06 billion. That segment is now about 41% of Mastercard's net revenue. The company attributed the growth to transaction volume, demand across several services and "pricing."
Another line shows who Mastercard competes to please. Rebates and incentives paid to its customers rose 18% to $6.37 billion. Those customers are the banks that issue cards and the acquirers that sign up merchants. The money moves between Mastercard and those institutions, so a merchant never sees it directly.
In the release, CEO Michael Miebach pointed to agentic commerce and a new Global Money Platform built on BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure company that Mastercard's April earnings release described as a planned acquisition. We covered the agent side in Visa and Mastercard's AI shopping agent plans.
What it means for you. A larger share of network growth now comes from selling services and from pricing. Expect your acquirer to pitch more paid fraud and authentication tools, and read new network fee lines on your statement closely. If you're on interchange-plus pricing, network fees should appear as separate pass-through items. If you're on tiered or flat-rate pricing, ask your provider in writing how network cost changes reach your rate.
Worked example (illustrative). Assume an online store processes $40,000 a month across 800 transactions, a $50 average ticket. One basis point (0.01%) on $40,000 is $4 a month. A 5-basis-point increase costs $20 a month, or $240 a year. A new $0.03 per-transaction fee on 800 sales costs $24 a month, or $288 a year. Together that's $528 a year from two changes that each look tiny on a notice. Run the same math with your own volume and transaction count whenever a fee notice arrives.
Tencent Visa Partnership Targets Travelers to and From China
On October 29, Tencent and Visa signed a memorandum of understanding to broaden their existing partnership, announced at Tencent's Global Digital Ecosystem Summit in Shenzhen, CNBC and other outlets reported. The companies will explore ways for travelers entering and leaving China to pay participating merchants through TenPay Global, Tencent's cross-border payment platform, and Visa Pay, including connectivity between the Weixin Pay wallet and Visa's network. They also plan to expand remittances through Visa Direct so more overseas senders can move money into the Weixin Pay ecosystem. A third strand covers AI-agent shopping using Visa Intelligent Commerce.
The context is regulatory. On October 13, the People's Bank of China approved Visa's application to prepare a domestic bank card clearing business, which lets Visa start formal preparations but doesn't yet let it process domestic payments. Citi separately received approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission to set up a wholly owned securities company.
What it means for you. An MoU is a plan to explore, and the payment pieces are subject to regulatory requirements. Neither company has given a timeline, so nothing changes at your terminal or checkout today. If regulators sign off, Chinese travelers could find it easier to pay merchants abroad. The companies haven't said how that would work in practice.
Hotels, tour operators and retailers in shopping districts popular with Chinese visitors should watch this one. If those visitors are a meaningful share of your sales, ask your processor which wallets and alternative payment methods you can accept today, and how they settle. Don't sign a separate wallet agreement or buy new hardware on the strength of this announcement. Adyen Q3 2026 Results: Trading Margin for Loyalty and Billing Tools
Adyen published its Q3 2026 business update on October 28. Net revenue was €738 million, up 23% year over year (22% in constant currency), and processed volume rose 30% to €451 billion. The company kept its 2026 revenue growth guidance at 21% to 23% in constant currency. It now expects a 2026 EBITDA margin of 50%, down from its earlier target, and is dropping its medium-term EBITDA objective. Its shares fell more than 10% that day.
The reason is spending on two acquisitions: Talon. One, which runs loyalty programs and promotions, and Orb, which handles usage-based billing. Adyen said merchant interest has been stronger than expected. On the earnings call, management said the two businesses added about 2 percentage points to constant-currency revenue growth in the quarter. Adyen's first wins for the combined offer were enterprise deals, but the idea of payments sold together with loyalty and billing is spreading across the industry.
What it means for you. A bundle can be convenient: one vendor, one contract, customer data in one place. But it also raises the cost of leaving. If your points program and subscription schedules live inside your processor's software, switching means migrating customer balances, promotion rules and billing dates, which is a much bigger job than swapping a terminal.
Before you accept a bundled loyalty or billing tool, get three answers in writing:
- Can you export customer, points and billing data in a standard file format at any time?
- Is the software priced separately from processing, so you can compare it with the standalone tool you use now?
- Does the software price depend on keeping your processing volume with that provider?
If the answers make leaving hard, line up a second option first. Our guide to why medium-risk merchants need a backup payment processor explains how to set one up.
Other Payment Processing News From October 29 We're Still Confirming
Several other items circulated in the past 48 hours. They include a reported card-skimming campaign that ran through a compromised third-party analytics script on e-commerce checkouts, processor pricing changes said to take effect November 1, and stablecoin and tokenization announcements. We hadn't confirmed them against primary documents by deadline, so we've left out the details rather than repeat second-hand numbers.
Two checks make sense regardless of how those stories shake out. First, inventory every script that loads on your payment page. Self-hosted stores on WooCommerce, Magento or OpenCart load those scripts themselves, so the inventory is the merchant's job. Our explainer on PCI DSS 4.0.1 payment page script rules covers what the standard expects. Second, read the notices section of your October statement and your November statement when it arrives, and price any change with the basis-point math above. If you're weighing stablecoins, how USDC checkout works on Shopify is a practical starting point.
Your most useful step before November 1 is to pull your latest statement and list every network and processor fee line with its rate. If a line is new or higher and you can't tell why, ask your provider for the reason in writing.
